“Rohit Will Welcome a Less Stressful Role with MI”: Ashwin Reveals Ahead of Mega IPL 2025 Auction

In recent months, there has been growing speculation about the future of some of India’s biggest cricket stars in the IPL, especially with the mega auction likely happening later this year. Among the names drawing the most attention is Rohit Sharma, India’s T20 World Cup-winning captain, who has been a key figure for the Mumbai Indians (MI) for over a decade. However, after a controversial 2024 IPL season where Rohit played under the leadership of Hardik Pandya, questions have come up about whether he will continue with MI.

Rohit Sharma’s legacy in the IPL is monumental. Under his captaincy, Mumbai Indians have won five IPL titles, the most by any team in the league’s history, with the latest championship coming in 2020. Rohit’s leadership turned MI into one of the most dominant franchises in the IPL. However, the decision to hand over the captaincy to Hardik Pandya has sparked debate and uncertainty about Rohit’s future with the team. Fans and experts alike are curious about what lies ahead for the legendary captain as the 2025 IPL season approaches.

The possibility of MI not retaining Rohit Sharma has created a buzz among cricket fans and experts alike. Rohit’s decade-long connection with the franchise, combined with his impressive track record, makes the discussion about his future even more significant. Despite the uncertainty, India’s star off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, is confident that Rohit will continue to play for MI.

Ashwin shared his thoughts on his YouTube channel, expressing that even if Rohit is no longer the captain, he is likely content to stay with the Mumbai Indians. Ashwin pointed out that at this stage in Rohit’s career, it’s not just about money or titles; it’s about being part of a team where he feels at home. He believes that Rohit, having led both India and MI for many years, might welcome a less stressful role while still contributing to the team.

“Even if you think like Rohit, it’s not wrong at all. ‘I don’t want any headache. I have been a captain for India. I have captained Mumbai many times. Even if I am not a captain, I am going to Mumbai happily. If I play for Mumbai, it’s super’. I am sure most players are like that. After a stage, money doesn’t matter for some of those players. That’s the thing,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, as quoted by ANI.

Rohit had a strong performance in the 2024 IPL season, scoring 417 runs at an average of 32.07 and a strike rate of 150. His season included a century and a fifty, with his highest score being 105*. Despite his efforts, MI had a disappointing season, finishing at the bottom of the table with only four wins out of 14 matches. Even though the team struggled, Rohit’s individual performance showed that he remains a valuable player.
