Former India seamer Paras Mhambrey has been appointed as the bowling coach for Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2025 season. Mhambrey, who previously worked with Mumbai Indians as an assistant coach, will now join forces with Lasith Malinga, who is currently the team’s main bowling coach. Both will work under newly re-appointed head coach Mahela Jayawardene.

Mhambrey has a wealth of coaching experience. He served as India’s bowling coach from 2021 until August of this year, working alongside head coach Rahul Dravid. During his tenure, he was part of the coaching staff that helped India win the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean. Additionally, Mhambrey was a key figure in the Mumbai Indians’ earlier successes; he was part of the support staff when the team won its first IPL title in 2013 and the Champions League T20 in both 2011 and 2013.

Beyond his work with the Indian national team and Mumbai Indians, Mhambrey has had extensive coaching experience in domestic cricket. He coached India A and also led the Bengal team to two consecutive Ranji Trophy finals in 2005-06 and 2006-07. Mhambrey’s own cricketing career includes playing two Tests and three ODIs for India between 1996 and 1998. In domestic cricket, he represented Mumbai, where he took 284 wickets in 91 first-class games and 111 wickets in 83 List A matches.

Mumbai Indians have been undergoing several changes in their coaching and support staff as they look to rebuild after a disappointing IPL 2024 season, where they finished last with just four wins from 14 matches under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya. To kick off the new season, they brought back Mahela Jayawardene as head coach, who had previously led the team from 2017 to 2022 and helped them win multiple titles. With his return, the franchise hopes to reinvigorate the team’s performance.

One of the immediate tasks for Mhambrey, Malinga, and Jayawardene will be to finalize the squad’s player retentions before the October 31 deadline. The decisions made during this retention process will be crucial for the team as they look to improve on last season’s results.
