The Indian cricket team is contemplating the inclusion of specialist wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan for the upcoming Test series against England. The 25-year-old, currently on a cricket break, is eyeing a return for the five-Test series starting in Hyderabad on January 25. Amidst discussions about his exclusion from the T20I series against Afghanistan, Ishan may express his availability for the Test matches.
In adherence to the team management’s policy, led by coach Rahul Dravid, which emphasizes playing a domestic game before an international return from an extended break, Ishan is considering making himself available for Jharkhand’s fixture against Services in Delhi from January 19. This move aims to prove his match readiness, as he last played for India on November 28.
Dravid Clarified that there is no disciplinary reason against Ishan
Contrary to speculations regarding disciplinary issues, Dravid clarified that Ishan’s break was voluntary and not due to any indiscipline. The coach stated that Ishan has not yet made himself available for selection, dismissing reports of disciplinary problems. Dravid emphasized that when Ishan decides to make himself available, he will participate in domestic cricket to showcase his form for selection.
In a strategic move towards having a specialist wicketkeeper, KS Bharat has been tasked with playing in the A series against England Lions in Ahmedabad, preparing him for the wicketkeeping role. Ishan Kishan remains a potential candidate for this specialized position in the upcoming Test series, starting January 25.
Meanwhile, the team management aims to relieve KL Rahul from the dual responsibilities of wicket keeping and batting, especially considering the challenges posed by the turning Indian pitches. Rahul, who kept wickets in the recent Tests in South Africa, has been advised to focus solely on his batting to avoid undue strain, particularly in light of his recent back surgery. As part of this strategy, Rahul will skip the Ranji Trophy.
Shreyas Iyer has been advised to play a multi-format game and will represent Mumbai against Andhra from January 12 in Mumbai. The team management is making thoughtful decisions to optimize player roles and ensure the best possible performance in the upcoming series.
