Jasprit Bumrah showcased a masterful display of reverse swing on day two of the second Test against England, securing his best figures in India with an impressive six for 45 in 15.5 overs. Bumrah’s skillful execution played a pivotal role in dismissing England for 253, allowing the hosts to claim a substantial 143-run first-innings lead.
Known for his ability to make the ball move both ways, Bumrah’s setup of batsmen like Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, and Ollie Pope demonstrated his artistry. The social media buzzed with a widely circulated clip of Bumrah’s booming inswinging yorker dismantling Pope’s stumps.
Notably, Bumrah attributed his success to the mastery of reverse swing, a skill he honed early in his career due to the nature of pitches in India. Reflecting on his approach, Bumrah mentioned, “In reverse swing, you don’t have to bowl magical deliveries every ball.” He described the execution of his plan against Pope as satisfactory and acknowledged the importance of hitting the right areas.
The away swingers against Root and Bairstow, who anticipated an incoming delivery, added significant value to the team’s cause. While Bumrah refrains from rating his performances, he acknowledged the importance of those key wickets in the context of the game.
Jasprit Bumrah explains Ben Stokes’ bewildered reaction in 2nd Test
Addressing the perplexed reaction on Ben Stokes’ face for the second time in the series, Jasprit Bumrah humorously remarked, “I don’t know what Stokes was thinking but I attempted an outswing but the ball went straight so I think maybe he had seen the shine and thought the ball would go away but it came in straight and he got bowled.
“We know he is a dangerous batsman at that moment when he bats with the lower-order as he bats with freedom and takes lot of chances,” said Bumrah.
He explained that an attempted outswing went straight, catching Stokes off guard. Recognizing Stokes’ potency with the lower order, Bumrah highlighted the importance of staying vigilant against the dangerous batsman.
Despite possessing an array of variations, Bumrah emphasized the significance of patience in Test cricket. He stressed the need to focus on the present and adapt to the conditions, stating, “Even if you have everything, you don’t need to use everything at one particular time.”
Bumrah emphasized shutting out external distractions and concentrating on the next ball in a game that teaches patience. His measured approach and ability to deliver under pressure have made him a key asset for India in the Test format.
