Jasprit Bumrah emerged as the standout performer for India in the second innings of the 1st Test against England at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. On a spin-friendly wicket, the visitors posted a total of 420, setting a challenging target of 231 for India.
In a brilliant display of seam bowling, the right-arm pacer claimed four crucial wickets on Day 4, contributing significantly to England’s early downfall. Bumrah had also made an impact in the first innings by taking two wickets.
With this remarkable performance, Bumrah achieved a milestone, reaching 146 Test wickets. This places him third among Indian bowlers with the most scalps in their first 33 matches, trailing behind Ravichandran Ashwin (183) and Ravindra Jadeja (155). His impressive average of 20.81 in 63 innings underscores his consistency in the format.

Jasprit Bumrah and his brilliance in 1st Test against England was evident in both innings
Bumrah’s effectiveness was evident in both innings. In the first, he broke a pivotal partnership by dismissing Rehan Ahmed and later sent Ben Stokes, England’s lone half-centurion of the match, back to the pavilion. In the second innings, Bumrah continued his dominance by dismissing Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Rehan, and Ollie Pope, ultimately preventing Pope from reaching a double century. He conceded 41 runs in the second innings (16.1).
A notable statistic in Bumrah’s performance is his mastery against England’s captain, Joe Root. Bumrah has dismissed Root seven times in their 19 Test encounters, with Root averaging 35 in this battle. Only a select few bowlers, including Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, and Mitchell Starc, have dismissed Root more frequently in Test cricket, with five of Root’s dismissals against Bumrah occurring in England.
Bumrah has established himself as a thorn in England’s side, accumulating 47 Test wickets from 11 matches against the Three Lions, boasting an impressive average of 22.93 in the format, including two five-wicket hauls.
