The much-anticipated 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 is poised to dazzle fans as it gets underway in Chennai on March 22, as confirmed by multiple IPL officials. IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal shared the exciting news, igniting the countdown to one of the most prestigious T20 tournaments in the world.
Adding to the spectacle, the IPL has planned a captivating inaugural ceremony before the commencement of the first match. Chennai, being the defending champions, has the honor of hosting this ceremonial launch. The CEO of the Chennai Super Kings franchise, Kasi Viswanathan, disclosed the details about the planned festivities, enhancing the opening day’s grandeur.
Traditionally, the opening match of the IPL features the finalists from the previous season, making it a potential clash between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans. However, Dhumal and Viswanathan couldn’t confirm if the age-old tradition would be followed for the March 22 contest.
“It has not been finalized yet,” mentioned Dhumal, and Viswanathan added, “We have no information about the opponents as of now.”
While the specific opponents remain uncertain, the possibility of Gujarat Titans being part of the opening match cannot be ruled out. Dhumal informed that the IPL will release a partial schedule in the next couple of days, with the full schedule to follow once the Election Commission of India announces the General Election dates.
To ensure that the IPL schedule doesn’t clash with the elections, the full schedule will be finalized based on the Election Commission’s announcement, expected to take place between the second and third week of March. Dhumal expressed confidence that the IPL won’t need to be moved out of the country, and there might be more centers involved than the usual 10.
The IPL extravaganza is set to conclude on May 26, promising weeks of exhilarating cricket action, intense rivalries, and memorable moments that will captivate fans worldwide. As the countdown begins, cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the unveiling of the complete schedule, anticipating an unforgettable season of the IPL in 2024.
