Ishan Kishan has been ruled out of the first round of the 2024 Duleep Trophy due to a groin injury, the BCCI confirmed. Kishan sustained the during the Buchi Babu tournament, ruling him out of the first round of the 2024 Duleep Trophy, where he was set to play for Shreyas Iyer’s Team D. In his place, Sanju Samson has been named as the replacement, despite not being initially selected for any of the four teams.
Kishan’s availability for the later stages of the Duleep Trophy remains uncertain. His participation will also depend on the Indian team’s selection for the upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh. If fit, Kishan could potentially feature in the later matches of the six-game competition. Team D’s next game is scheduled against Team A on September 12 in Anantapur.
Kishan recently played for Jharkhand in the Buchi Babu tournament in Chennai. However, his involvement was cut short as his team did not advance beyond the league stage. He played two matches, scoring 1 and 5 in the second game against Hyderabad after scoring a century (114) in the first innings and remaining unbeaten on 41 in the second innings of the first game against Madhya Pradesh. Despite his efforts, Jharkhand was eliminated from the tournament.
Last season, Kishan faced disciplinary action from the national selectors for skipping Ranji Trophy matches despite the BCCI’s instructions. He was informed that he would be considered for national selection only after playing for his state team. While his participation in the Buchi Babu tournament may have partially fulfilled this requirement, the tournament is not recognized as a national competition. His inclusion in the Duleep Trophy suggests that the selectors may be easing their tough stance against him.
In addition to Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav will also miss the opening round of the Duleep Trophy due to a sprained right thumb. The India T20I captain is currently undergoing treatment at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Other notable absentees include Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Siraj, who have been withdrawn from the competition for different reasons. However, allrounder Nitish Reddy has been cleared to participate.
Meanwhile, Prasidh Krishna’s return from a quad injury has been further delayed. The pacer, who missed the IPL 2024 due to surgery in February, will sit out Team A’s first game, scheduled in Bengaluru from September 5. Skipper Shubman Gill confirmed the news, which was later corroborated by the BCCI. Krishna was expected to return during the Karnataka Premier League (KPL) but will now miss at least the opening fixture.
Lastly, Ajay Ratra, recently appointed as a selector by the BCCI, will begin his new role immediately, overseeing the Duleep Trophy matches in Anantapur.
